From rescuers to astronauts: robot FEDOR changes its occupation

The robotics industry is developing so rapidly that no one will be surprised with robots in space or serving as rescue service workers in several years. Engineers are developing specialized anthropomorphic robotic systems to perform challenging and dangerous operations instead of human beings.

To discover the concept of designing such robots and their capabilities, we have talked to Evgeniy Dudorov, CTO at Android Technics Scientific Production Association and speaker at Robotics Expo.

About robot FEDOR and its skills

Having created robot FEDOR, engineers were primarily aimed at developing a system for the combined control of anthropomorphic robotic systems, assisting people in rescue operations of any complexity.

FEDOR was designed in two stages:

  • developing several options of anthropomorphic technological platforms;
  • testing technologies for creating a demonstrator.

All robot’s skills are an elaborated set of algorithms controlled by the operator. In several years, one could design sets of private algorithms. They will be the foundation for AI. Although artificial intelligence is currently absent, it can improve machine functionality in future.

FEDOR is able to apply such rescuers’ equipment for the response to ES as burners, screw jacks, scissors etc.

About FEDOR space launch

We won’t launch FEDOR into space, because it is designed only for Earth activities. Currently, one is developing similar robots. We will test each of them and determine the best one before launching. Experiment conditions: vacuum under the load at a temperature of -150 to +100 °C.

About projects of Scientific Production Association

We have a huge amount of projects in various sectors:

  • space systems: project on developing modules for orbit operations;
  • medical equipment: exoskeleton devices for patient rehabilitation;
  • education: robotic systems for higher educational establishments.

Robotic systems have become a main platform for robot exploration. Beginning developers are discovering features of systems for dynamic balance and machine vision, bipedal locomotion and manipulations with objects.

About cooperation with higher educational establishments

Our association contacts with 100 universities, with 15 of them cooperating especially closely. I can say that almost all federal universities are our partners. They are equipped with modern laboratories for investigations of either whole anthropomorphic systems or their parts.

About unmanned technologies

The concept is that a variety of complicated tasks can be performed by robots instead of people. Most frequently, it refers to situations that can jeopardize human lives: space, emergencies and so on.

The space robotics area requires robotic systems for space station operations. It is also better to use robots when eliminating danger situations in order to protect Emergency Service members from injuries.

Machines will be anyway controlled by certain specialists from safe locations. For instance, the team of rescuers may have a doctor who will determine the severity of victim’s injury using a robot’s eye and order the robot to deliver medical care. Indeed, this concept is not fully implemented yet, but it will be possible in 5-10 years.

About development of android equipment industry in Russia

As to this industry in Russia, it can be hardly called well-formed. To make this area exist comprehensively, one needs more teams to develop it. Besides, the availability of tasks for developers is required as well. If there is no unsolved tasks, what is the point of these people? To develop the industry, one should also explore completed samples of anthropomorphic machines, such as FEDOR.
